LANSING, N.Y. (AP) _ Authorities say a 12-year-old boy is recovering after falling part-way down a 300-foot central New York cliff before getting snagged on a tree.
Emergency officials tell local media that the boy was hiking along the edge of a wooded cliff near a salt mine in Lansing Monday afternoon when he fell about 50 feet. After getting caught on a tree, he used his cellphone to call 911.
Firefighters from Lansing and nearby Ithaca used ropes and a harness to lower the boy to the ground. He was treated at an Ithaca hospital for cuts and bruises.
Officials say there are fences along the cliffs and signs warning hikers about potential hazards while hiking in the Ithaca area's gorges.
