The New York State Public Service Commission has decided to put a hold on any change to the 315 area code.

The PSC has now decided to wait until at least 2016 to bring the subject up again.

The PSC claimed that the area code was running out of numbers, and would have to split the 18 county region into two separate codes.

The agency now says there would be a potential disruption when a new area code is added and they want to temporarily postpone it and give it extra time.

Central New York politicans had lobbied hard against the change. They claimed that there are still plenty of numbers left in the 315 code and would place to great a burden on residential customers and business customers too.

The PSC held a series of public hearings around Central and Northern New York this year and a majority of those who spoke were opposed to the change.
