A deal to permit the Town of Dewitt to take over operation of the village of East Syracuse police department may yet become a reality.

Village and town officials are finalizing a proposed contract for Dewitt to handle law enforcement in the village.  Village trustees must still approve the agreement, and voters may also get to weigh in.  Just over a year ago, they shot down a similar deal, but taxes jumped 22 percent and many are said to feel differently now.  If it all goes as planned, the police merger would be effective January 1, 2015.  The board will consider the proposed contract at their meeting tonight.
