Students at one local middle school arrived at school this morning to hear that one of thier teacher had been in a serious accident.

Madison County Sheriffs Deputies say 48 year old Colleen Hyland is listed in very serious condition at a Syracuse hospital after her car ended up in the Erie Canal in the Town of Sullivan this morning.

The 7th grade social studies teacher at Chittenango Middle School lost control of her car on the Harsh Road trying to avoid another car that hit a set of guardrails.

Her car flipped over and ended up in about three feet of water in the canal. The other driver is identified as 53 year old Carolyn Kaplan of Oneida, and she wasn't seriously hurt after hitting those guardrails.

Sheriffs deputies are still investigating both accidents, but so far no charges have been lodged.
