BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) _ Public health authorities say parents attempting to keep their infants warm during the recent severe weather played a role in the accidental deaths this month of six infants in the Buffalo area.

Erie County Health Commissioner Dr. Gale Burstein tells local media outlets that unsafe sleeping practices led to the deaths of six babies, including three in the past week when the region had single-digit temperatures and sub-zero wind chill.

Burstein says three of the infants had been placed in bed with an adult who unknowingly rolled over on top of the baby. She says two others suffocated when too many blankets were placed on them in their cribs. Details of the other death weren't released.

Pediatricians recommend dressing babies in layers and placing them on their backs on a firm crib mattress.
