Disgraced former New York governor Eliot Spitzer's attempt to reclaim his political career has failed.

Spitzer's last-minute entry into the race for the Democratic nomination for New York City comptroller attracted a lot of attention, but not enough votes. Manhattan borough president Scott Stringer held a 52 to 48 percent lead with most precincts reporting when Spitzer conceded. In defeat, Spitzer said he was proud to run a campaign many thought even possible to conduct.
