Sears in Downtown Syracuse May Get a Facelift after 44 Years Empty

The long vacant Sears building on South Salina Street may get a $20 million renovation by Crouse Hospital which wants to move its outpatient drug treatment program there. The building has been empty for 44-years, it would be turned into a three-story medical office building while retaining its art deco exterior features.

The drug treatment program is currently located at 410 S. Crouse Ave. The program has outgrown that space and the hospital has been looking for a larger location for three years, said Bob Allen, a Crouse vice president.

Crouse said in a written summary the project will improve access to needed health services in the community and could encourage other development in the neighborhood.

The hospital has not purchased the Sears building or made a final decision on the project yet, Allen said.
