Scientists are issuing a LIGHTS OUT ALERT to help the birds find their way! This is the week through September 17th when hundreds of millions of birds are on the move while we sleep at night.
According to researchers detailed here "Many species of migratory birds have evolved the ability to migrate at night, and the recent and rapid expansion of artificial light at night has markedly altered the nighttime sky through which they travel. Migrating birds regularly pass through heavily illuminated landscapes, and bright lights affect avian orientation."
So to help out the birds each night this week, we're supposed to turn off as much light as possible to avoid confusion for them.
