Central New York is experiencing another day of intense heat as temperatures are expected to soar into the 90s. The National Weather Service has issued a heat advisory from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. for several counties, including Onondaga, Cayuga, and Oswego, with heat index values reaching between 95 and 100 degrees. Residents are advised to stay indoors and stay hydrated to prevent heat-related illnesses.
The New York State Department of Homeland Security and Emergency Services has issued warnings, emphasizing the dangers of heat, particularly for vulnerable populations like seniors and children. Cathleen Palmitesso, director of the Oswego County Emergency Management Office, stressed that "heat can be deadly." Residents are encouraged to use an online tool provided by the county to locate cooling centers and other resources.
The forecast indicates that relief from the humidity will come by Friday afternoon, with a cold front expected to bring cooler conditions. Until then, the region will continue to experience hot and humid weather, with isolated thundershowers possible in the afternoons.
Officials recommend that those who need to go outside stay hydrated and take frequent breaks in shaded areas. For those without air conditioning, public facilities offer a respite from the heat.
The Environmental Protection Agency and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend checking cooling equipment and making home improvements to prepare for extreme heat events. Residents can sign up for weather alerts on NY Alert or download the FEMA app for real-time updates.
