Onondaga County residents waking up Wednesday (January 28) are facing another round of winter weather as a winter weather advisory remains in effect until 3 p.m. today.

The National Weather Service issued the advisory late Tuesday night, warning of snow accumulations between 3 and 6 inches from Syracuse northward, with a sharp cutoff in totals south of the city.

Areas like Baldwinsville, Cicero, Brewerton, and Lysander are expected to receive the highest amounts of snowfall, while southern locations such as Lafayette and Tully may see only about an inch of accumulation.

The steadiest snow fell overnight, but morning commuters should prepare for challenging road conditions. According to meteorologists at CNY Central, temperatures in the teens will likely result in snow-covered roads even with relatively low snow totals.

"Plan on slippery road conditions. The hazardous conditions could impact the Wednesday morning commute," the National Weather Service stated in its advisory.

The lake effect snow pattern is expected to shift later today, with heavier snow developing across the Tug Hill region and east of Lake Ontario by afternoon. Overnight tonight into Thursday morning, the lake effect snow will move south into Oswego County.

Weather experts advise drivers to slow down and use caution while traveling. For the latest road conditions, residents can call 511.

The cold temperatures and lake effect snow showers are forecast to continue into the early weekend, with lingering light snow possible Saturday morning before conditions improve Saturday afternoon.

For those who must travel during these conditions, safety experts recommend keeping gas tanks full and vehicles equipped with winter supplies including scrapers, jumper cables, flashlights, blankets, and emergency food and water.
