Bobby Bones Says One Thing Is a Deal Breaker for Wedding Spending
In today's Anonymous Inbox, a listener shared that while they want their wedding to be a special, once-in-a-lifetime celebration, they're starting to clash with their fiancée over the budget. She'd rather keep things simple and put the extra money toward a house or future vacations, while he worries they'll never get another chance to have this wedding.
Bobby's advice was simple: don't go into debt for it!
"If you have to take a loan out for anything, don't do it," Bobby said. While he acknowledged weddings are incredible celebrations, he pointed out that the day goes by quickly and may not be worth years of financial stress afterward.
Amy agreed and said there's usually a middle ground between overspending and cutting everything out. Looking back at her own wedding, one of the biggest money-saving moves came from her sister handling the flowers instead of hiring a florist.
"People will tell you that you need to spend money on certain things," Amy said. "But it's your wedding, so do what you want."
The show traded several ideas for cutting costs, including scaling back on decorations, simplifying the venue setup, and finding creative ways to reuse spaces. Amy shared that she and her ex-husband used the same location for both the ceremony and reception, with volunteers helping transform the space in between.
Bobby also joked about finding ways around the "wedding tax," noting that vendors sometimes increase prices the moment they hear an event is a wedding. His humorous suggestion? Tell the bakery it's for Grandma's birthday, then swap out the decorations later.
Lunchbox admitted his father-in-law covered the bill for his wedding, making budgeting a little easier, but still agreed that couples should decide on a firm spending limit and stick to it.
The biggest takeaway from the conversation was that while weddings are important, starting a marriage under a mountain of debt probably isn't worth it. If the wedding is still a year away, Bobby suggested creating a savings plan now instead of relying on credit cards or loans later.
