School started this week as children across Central New York returned to classrooms to begin a new academic year. As a result, it is important to be reminded about school bus safety. As drivers, it is up to us to help insure that all children get to and from school in a safe and timely manner!
Law enforcement agencies want to remind drivers to be extra vigilant and slow down in a school zone. Furthermore, remember that it is against the law to pass a school bus with its lights flashing red. Children will be boarding or exiting a bus when those lights are on.
Finally, when the red lights are flashing, this means you MUST stop in all directions. This includes school buses that are on opposite sides of a divided highway, on multiple lane roads, in parking lots, and on school grounds. Failure to do so could result in a fine of $250 and up to 30 days in jail. Safety is everyone’s responsibility!
