Winter in Central New York has been hibernating so far. Most of us have been quite content with that. However, according to some meteorologists, it appears that Old Man Winter will be waking up pretty soon.
Paul Pastelok, a meteorologist for Accuweather, thinks that winter will return by the end of January. “I think the pattern is going to change to colder in the last week of January, and February looks more cold than mild at this point,” Pastelok said. Why? Look for the Polar Vortex to be the culprit!
The Polar Vortex, a system of cold air the circles the North Pole, will head southward, breaking into branches as it heads south. This will bring cold air to Central New York. While the vortex won’t be as bad as it was in 2015, cold air will be more dominate than warm air.
Some lake effect will also accompany the colder air, but Pastelok doesn’t seem a lot of lake effect heading our way. “It doesn’t look like a big lake effect year,” he said. He also said that “a lot of the systems in February will go toward the Mid-Atlantic and Southern New England,” Pastelok said.
So there you have it. Winter will find us again, but maybe we will get lucky and the snowfall amounts will be manageable. We can only hope!
