Onondaga lake's recovery has brough back a natural wonder which had been lost for decades- bald eagle roosts along the lake shore. These birds of prey have been seen in droves as big as 45 in one area behind the mall, and wildlife photographers are having a field day with it.
The best way to spot them is to check out the back parking lot of Destiny USA behind Best Buy, right by the road that travels the circumference of Destiny's parking lot. They tend to hand out in the trees behind the railroad track, by the lake.
The Onondaga Lake Creek Walk also has opportunities to see them- usually the end portion is closed off due to weather this time of year but apparently you can occasionally see them looking for food in the creek. Bird tours which come through the area every once in a while have been seeing them in large groups and people have been dumfounded by how cool it is to see such amazing birds in our little corner of the world.
I know what I'm doing this weekend!
