During his halftime performance at Super Bowl LII, Justin Timberlake used footage of Prince performing in Syracuse, NY to pay tribute to the legendary musician.
I’m sure many of you may remember seeing this renowned concert in 1985, and may have recognized it amongst clips from Purple Rain as Timberlake performed a cover of “I Would Die 4 U” for more than 106 million viewers.
Luckily for us, Syracuse was featured after Timberlake’s original plan to use a hologram of Prince was nixed after Sheila E., who performed with Prince at the Carrier Dome in 1985, brought to light Prince’s wishes regarding holograms. Prince was spiritually against holograms, finding them very “Demonic,” as he told Guitar World.
One thing’s for sure, Timberlake’s performance was anything but demonic, paying a beautiful tribute to a beautiful city and a legendary musician.
