If you were hoping to get that golden glow, and you're under 18, you'll have to find another way in New York State. The state has just passed a law that says anyone under the age 18 is no longer permitted to use indoor tanning facilities. Before this law, anyone 17 and under was allowed to use tanning booths without parental consent.
Governor Cuomo says this law is a preventive measure to protect our youth. Using tanning booths under the age of 18 can be extremely harmful and cause premature skin aging and cancer. So, it's probably a good idea to just ban it all together. Most people know that tanning can be harmful for you, but the American Cancer Society estimates that one in six girls using tanning booths by their senior year of high school. Clearly, this is a problem.
While this won't stop teens from finding other ways to tan, it's a good preventive measure.
