New York State is requesting bids to redevelop 27 service areas along the 570-mile Thruway system. The improvements will be through a partnership between the public and private sectors. Then last major upgrade to the interstate's service areas occurred in the 1990s.
The Thruway Authority would like to see a more diverse selection of food and beverage options. The redevelopment will also seek to upgrade the interiors and exteriors of the service buildings along with the restrooms.
In addition to the above mentioned improvements, Thruway officials plan to include energy-efficient systems, expanded parking for oversized and commercial drivers, and electric vehicle charging stations. The renovations are in line with Governor Andrew Cuomo's 2018 agenda in which he called the service areas in "dire need" of improvements. It will be interesting to see what new services will be offered upon completion!
