Fifty years ago, December 10, 1968, a supermarket chain, based in Rochester, NY, opened its first store in the Syracuse area. Wegmans was already a successful story in the Rochester area. The firm, which proclaimed itself “a most unusual supermarket,” was ready to expand into the Syracuse area.
Wegmans, which already operated 26 stores, opened its first store in Syracuse on Route 57 at John Glenn Boulevard on that December day. The company would quickly open three more stores in the area. Robert Wegman, president of the company, promised the community a brand new grocery shopping experience. “If your food shopping trips become a sort of adventure instead of a chore, then I’d say we’ve been successful,” he would say.
Well Wegmans has been very successful and beneficial to our community. It has had an enormous impact on the local economy. Furthermore, the company has become an iconic institution which has many loyal customers. Wegmans now has 98 stores in 6 states. It is one of the largest companies in the United States with 48,000 employees and sales in excess 8.7 billion in 2017. Congratulations to the Wegman family for 50 years in the Syracuse area!
