In an interesting move, New York State has commissioned a blue ribbon task force who has been asked to find new ways to revitalize the state’s historic Erie Canal. The committee is being chaired by former Onondaga County Executive Joanie Mahoney who will oversee 19 members.
The committee will consider ways that the Erie Canal can bolster economic development, recreation and tourism, and irrigate farms located in Western New York.
The committee will also consider ways The the 195 year old canal mitigate flooding and ice jam damage along its 363 mile route. Governor Andrew Cuomo hopes to have the committee’s recommendations sent to him by the end of the year. This sounds like a great way to restore the canal to its former luster. Good luck to all involved!
