Will it still be the same? Well I haven’t decided yet after finding out that the City of Syracuse will replace the annual Christmas tree with an artificial one. Mayor Ben Walsh made the announcement the other day saying that the artificial tree will save the City $370,000 over the next 10 years in time and manpower it takes to hang lights and remove them.
Walsh also said that it is getting harder every year to find a tree whose measurements are easy to deal with on an annual basis. Lastly, the way the lights are draped on the tree in past years has led to many mean comments from people who do not like the way the tree looks.
The tree lighting ceremony dates back to December 1914 when it was lit in front of a “modest” sized crowd. The ceremony will still continue, but the tree will be different. I guess I’ll reserve judgment till I see it lit this Friday, November 29th.
