Syracuse police continue to investigate an assault on a 70-year-old man that hospitalized him in critical condition.

Police say that James Gifford was attacked by group of four to five males early Saturday morning in the parking lot of a 7-11 store at South Avenue and Valley Drive. Connellan says Gifford was taken to Upstate University Hospital where his condition is reported as critical.

Community leaders, including Mayor Stephanie Miner, met at the crime scene Sunday to express their anger at the attack and to ask the public for help in finding those responsible. Police are asking anyone with information about Gifford's attack to contact them at 442-5222. They say all calls will be kept strictly confidential.
